While most are advised to feed the Cushings horse a specialized formulated no sugar/low carb feed, I believe that doing so can actually be detrimental to your horse’s health. Processed feeds are known to be a causative factor in Insulin Resistance and EMS.
My own Cushings horse doesn’t get any processed feeds. He gets RAW vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds as well as an organic, whole feed. He’s shedding out nicely, has a good attitude, good energy and is putting on the healthy weight and muscle he needs.

Also, the milk sap of dandelions has been known to cause itchiness, irritation, or allergic reactions on the skin, and should be kept away from the eyes. Finally, there is a rare type of fiber in dandelions called inulin, and some people have a predisposed sensitivity or allergy to it which can be quite severe. When first adding dandelion greens to your diet in any way, start small and closely monitor your body’s response.

Food allergies are becoming a household concern and are on the rise. In addition to making life difficult for those who suffer from this modern epidemic, this is also further taxing to our medical system and our pockets.

According to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011.

Processed foods in general can contribute to allergies for a number of different reasons. Most processed foods contain a variety of food colorings, flavors, preservatives, and other additives can have a major impact. But there’s another, even more insidious hazard lurking in American food stores…
In the mid-1990′s, new food proteins were engineered and introduced into our food supply, yet many people are still, to this day, clueless about this. As O’Brien states, it was clearly done to maximize profitability for the food industry, yet NO human trials were ever conducted to see if these genetically engineered proteins were actually safe for animal- and human consumption.
One of the first foods to undergo this change was milk, which incidentally is also the number one food allergen in the US.
In 1994, the dairy industry started using a genetically engineered growth hormone, rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) on cows in order to increase milk production. However, it resulted in higher rates of disease in the treated livestock. To counteract the ill effects, dairies also had to start using more antibiotics, which we now know is one of the driving factors behind the rise in antibiotic-resistant superbugs in humans.
They ate food that had no preservatives, and were not processed. Foods came from farms and markets. Babies had a great start to life with breast milk. Those days, you seldom heard of dieting, not like today, as most foods we eat can cause bloating and obesity with all the added chemicals, additives, stabilizers, preservatives, food coloring, flavoring, and GMO’s so prevalent in today’s foods. The meats came from animals that were not pumped full of chemicals like today. Eating out was when you visited family and friends, eating good traditional home cooked meals from scratch. Old fashioned Chicken broth was used for most ailments.
Our grandparents didn’t have the choice to stay inside, on cell phones, computers and gaming systems. They played outside on the grass, climbed trees, rode bikes and had good healthy fun in mother nature!
They never ran to Doctors either for everything. When they got a fever, they waited it out. When they felt sick, they ate soups, broths and rested a lot. They did not have their doctor or nurse on speed dial, and trusted the body’s natural healing process a whole lot more than we do today. Their food was medicine, whether they realized it or not.

Purslane, also known as Portulaca oleracea, is considered a common weed to many that may even be growing in your garden right now, without your explicit invitation.
It started its cultivation in India and Persia, and spread to the rest of the world. Some cultures pluck it out and throw it away with leaf clippings and other weeds, while others cultivate it specifically to eat as food.
Purslane is an aesthetically attractive weed with fleshy leaves and often yellow flowers, but its health benefits are even more desirable.
Common in our yards but little known in the North American kitchen, purslane is both delicious and exceptionally nutritious. Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) — also known as duckweed, fatweed, pursley, pussley, verdolagas and wild portulaca — is the most frequently reported “weed” species in the world. It can grow anywhere that has at least a two-month growing season.
Until recently, most research on purslane has focused on its eradication. A frequently overlooked approach to controlling this weed is to eat it! Purslane is so surprisingly tasty, North Carolina market gardener Patryk Battle says, “I have rarely had anybody not buy purslane after they’ve tried it.”
Purslane is somewhat crunchy and has a slight lemony taste. Some people liken it to watercress or spinach, and it can substitute for spinach in many recipes. Young, raw leaves and stems are tender and are good in salads and sandwiches. They can also be lightly steamed or stir-fried. Purslane’s high level of pectin (known to lower cholesterol) thickens soups and stews.
Battle also uses purslane in pesto. He throws basil and purslane (upper stems and all) into a blender or food processor, adds a small amount of olive oil, garlic, pine nuts and enough hot water to get a good consistency. Because it’s so juicy, purslane helps create a low-fat pesto without too much oil.
When my microwave broke a few years ago we never replaced it. With all the controversy about the dangers of microwaving foods, we decided to keep to the ‘old’ ways and use the stove or steamer. Works just as well, even better; I save just a few minutes of time to reheat or boil water and there’s no nasty chemicals or radiation in our food!

When it comes specifically to microwaves, damage to the food itself isn’t the only concern. Many microwavable foods are processed and in packaging that contains an assortment of chemicals. Chemicals found in many of these containers include benzene, toluene, polyethylene terpthalate (PET), xylene, and dioxins (known carcinogens). At high temperatures, it is likely that chemicals can absorb into the food, and intake of these chemicals presents a high health risk. What’s more, the chemicals in the food themselves are also a cause for concern.
Perhaps one of the most dangerous contaminants in microwavable food is BPA. A watchdog report from the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel found this estrogen-like plastic leaked from all packaging into the food tested.  BPA disrupts normal hormone activity. Infertility, low-libido, cardiac disease, mental disorders, allergies, high blood pressure, and weight gain have all been linked to BPA exposure. The simple fact is, when you use a microwave, you’re getting a lot more than the food you eat.
